Why Use VPN? Here Are the Top 5 Reasons

Why Use VPN?” is one of the questions people frequently ask us. In this article, I will show you  how a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service like HMA(HideMyAss) VPN Pro makes your life easier.

1. Bypass Region Restriction

VPN service like HMA Pro VPN  is perfect for watching region restricted content: eg: watching Hulu, Netflix movies.

Most of the online video or news websites restrict accesses to their content by countries where the visitors come from. If you are trying to watch Hulu movies outside United States, you see the following alert.

Hulu United States Only

Because VPN conceals your real IP address and  assigns you a “Virtual” IP address, you can virtually live in any country where the video content is delivered. There are plenty of VPN providers you can choose however the one I like the most is  HMA Pro VPN. The reason is simple: HMA Pro VPN has largest amount of VPN servers and IP addresses in 51 countries, the largest amount of any VPN service. More VPN servers coverage means more countries for me to “live” in.  If you’re planning to use a VPN service for video viewing, unblocking regional restricted content, I suggest you check its geographic coverage first.

2. Why Use VPN: File Downloading

Using VPN service like HMA VPN, you can avoid the extra waiting period when using file hosting services.

When you are downloading files from file sharing website like RapidShare, you usually have to wait for the countdown before you see the download link. If the file you are about to download is split into multiple parts, then the waiting becomes even more painful.

Generally speaking, the more files you download the longer you have to wait. This is because most of these file hosting services record your IP address and check how many files you have downloaded in a given period of time. For example, to download a file that is split in 3 parts. you may need to wait for 60 seconds to download the first part, then wait for 30 minutes to download the 2 part, and wait 90 minutes to download the 3rd part of the file.

I want to show you how to use VPN to download files without waiting. I will use Firefox and HMA VPN in this example because with HMA VPN, it is very easy to change IP address every time before you start downloading a file.

  1. Open Firefox, click on the “Tools” menu. Choose “Start Private Browsing”

  2. Before you download a file you need to do the following:
    1. Close Firefox, and then restart it.
    2. Go to HMA, click “Change IP Address” as show below:

  3. Click the download link

That’s it, if you use this methord, there is no more extra waiting period. Thanks to Firefox, and HMA VPN.

(3). Enhanced Security

A VPN creates a “tunnel” between you and the VPN server. Anything passing through the “tunnel” is being encrypted and is invisible from the outside. This prevents hackers from stealing your personal information such as: Bank accounts and passwords.

More and more people these days use VPN services to protect themselves from preying eyes, especially in Wi-Fi spots like Starbucks,  universities, airports, and hotels. Though these open WI-FI(s) are very convenient for people on the go, however, they are also where Internet hackers are lurking.

People on the go often need to check their emails, hotel reservation, flights status etc frequently. If not being careful, you could get spied on and have your sensitive information stolen by malicious software such as Firesheep which was used by hackers to discover identities on unsecured networks. By installing VPN on your mobile device or computer, you can avoid becoming the victim of hotspot sniffing.HideMyAss Secure VPN intrnet browsing on iPad mini

(4). Being Anonymous

Because VPN can hide your real online identity (IP address), it prevents you from being tracked by such as: hackers or ISP. This allows you to surf the Internet anonymously, without sacrificing your privacy.

Hackers and certain websites try to capture your IP address to examine your online activities and find out where you are located. VPN can increase the anonymity when you browsing online. No matter if you are watching p0rn or downloading files using BitTorrent,  you don’t have to worry about that someone may watch over your shoulders because your real IP address is concealed. Even more, with HMA VPN, you can randomly change your IP address every a few minutes automatically which makes whoever wants to track your online activity even harder.

(5). Unblock Censored Websites

Do you hate it when some smart ass tells you what you can do and what you cannot? When it comes to Internet censorship, most people will think about China because Internet repression is considered more extensive and more advanced in China than in any other country in the world. What people don’t know is that actually most governments monitor or regulate Internet to certain extend. With the help of VPN, people in China or other countries can gain access to blocked website such as Youtube or WikiLeaks.

Summary

We have seen the top five reasons why use VPN, but how to choose the best VPN for you? The answer may not be as easy as you think. The biggest problem is there are just too many VPN vendors on the market to choose from, each claiming the best itself. Here is my recommendation.

  • Your first choice is HMA Pro VPN which is the most popular VPN service on the market. The reason I recommend HMA is because first, it has the largest VPN network coverage than any other providers, and second, it is inexpensive. With roughly $5/month , you can access all the VPN servers with no bandwidth limit. However, the biggest problem of HMA is it keeps logs of when you logon and logoff from the VPN server. This decreases the anonymity of the service.
  • If logging is a concern, you can choose no log VPN services such as: PureVPN or VPN4ALL.
  • If you absolutely can’t afford for a paid VPN service, you can try Tor. Tor is a open source VPN like service that is secure and free, but it is also very slow and doesn’t have as many features as paid VPN services. I wouldn’t recommend other free VPN services because they either try to install ad-wares on your computer or the majority already have their IP addresses blocked. It is just not worth the time and effort.

Comments

  1. Proxpn was awfully slow in my experience, HMA is at least double the speed but i have found making your own tunnel on a VPS is the fastest way to do things but perhaps not as secure. What bothers me about 90% of vpns is most still keep logs both of connection info and browsing records too, so when they say they are secure and encrypted it means very little when the provider keeps records like this. Cant say who is currently best most secure but running your own tunnel is the way forward IMO.

  2. I think all of these are valid reasons, however traveling has shown me just how much censorship there is on a global scale. I think unblocking access to websites has to rank among the top reasons for people outside of the USA to use a VPN service. Getting access to information, learning more, and enabling free speech is plays an important role in all of our lives.

  3. That’s a very good article and covers all the key reasons to get a VPN, nice work!
